France v Australia Betting Tips, Odds & Preview

Tough Start for the Socceroos

16 June 2018, 8pm AEST

When Ange Postecoglou decided to step down from his role as Australia manager, the powers that be went for experience with his replacement. Bert van Marwijk certainly has experience having guided his native Holland to the World Cup final in 2010. He’s surely not going to take the Socceroos that far in Russia and faces an incredibly tough task just to get out of Group C. The group gets off to the toughest possible start for Australia against a France side with immense quality. The Socceroos’ best chance is by defending deep to keep the score down but a 2-0 France win looks the most likely outcome.

Head to Head

France humbled the Socceroos 6-0 when the two teams last played in 2013. However, their only previous meeting in a competitive fixture ended 1-0 to Australia in the 2001 Confederations Cup. France shade the overall head to head record though with two wins to Australia’s one (there’s also been one draw).

Australia Projected Team

Ryan; Sainsbury, Milligan, Wright, Behich; Jedinak, Luongo; Mooy, Leckie, Rogic; Juric

France Projected Team

Lloris; Mendy, Jallet, Varane, Umtiti; Pogba, Kante, Coman, Mbappe; Giroud, Griezmann

Players to Watch

Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinak scored over 40% of the Socceroos’ goals in qualifying. Cahill may struggle for game time though so the performances of Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic will be key. France have a frankly awesome array of attacking talent. Antoine Griezmann is the main man up front but he’ll be supported by the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Lemar and Dimitri Payet. The midfield partnership of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante is incredibly solid.
