Whittaker vs Gastelum UFC Betting Tips
Aussie MMA fans, get ready: the Ultimate Fighting Championship comes to Melbourne on Sunday and there are some big fights on the card. In the main event, hometown hero Robert Whittaker will defend his crown against fellow striker Kelvin Gastelum of the United States.
Plenty of Aussies on card at UFC 234
Whittaker goes into his fight against Gastelum as a clear betting favourite, not least because of the strong home crowd support. The New Zealand-born Aussie has won four UFC bouts in Australia. The most recent of those wins came in Melbourne in November 2016 when he beat Derek Brunson by TKO 4:07 minutes into the first round. But this Sunday is different, because it marks Whittaker’s first UFC bout on home soil since being crowned the undisputed middleweight champion in 2017.
There are four other fights on the main card, two of them featuring Aussies. In the women’s flyweight, 23-year-old Sydneysider Nadia Kassem will attempt to extend her five-match unbeaten streak against 14th-ranked American Montana De La Rosa. 22-year-old Melburnian Jim Crute has an unbeaten record in eight bouts. He comes up against American veteran Sam “Smile’N” Alvey in the men’s light heavyweight.
Whittaker v Gastelum Betting Odds
Whittaker goes into his bout with Gastelum as a strong betting favourite, with most online bookies offering between 1.40 to 1.50 odds for a Whittaker win. But the big appeal for punters is in the method of victory, given Whittaker and Gastelum are both known for winning with a finish (meaning KO, TKO, DQ, Submission, or any other form of stoppage).
Unibet is paying 2.10 for Whittaker to win by finish, as he’s done in 72% of his 21 UFC victories. PointsBet is letting punters narrow it down even further with 2.75 odds on a Whittaker win by KO/TKO, something he’s achieved in 48 of his wins. Neds is paying 2.63 for the fight to go the distance, as has been the case in Whittaker’s last two bouts.
