Wimbledon 2018 Betting: Novak Djokovic looks a value bet for Wimbledon return to dominance
Wimbledon 2018 Men’s Champion – Novak Djokovic @ 4/1 (5.00) with bet365*
Having won the French Open title for the first time in his career, Novak Djokovic was the reigning champion in all four Grand Slam events and the undisputed dominant force in men’s tennis going into Wimbledon 2016.
With 12 Grand Slam titles, including three at Wimbledon to his name, he was a hot favourite to continue his winning ways and add another Grand Slam title to the list at SW19.
Back then nobody would have believed that the Serb would come into Wimbledon 2018 ranked as world number 21 and with only three Tour wins to his name in almost two years. However, that 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 victory in Paris in 2016 over Andy Murray was to be Djokovic’s last Grand Slam title, with a 3rd round defeat at the hands of Sam Querrey at Wimbledon being the first sign that all was not well.
His cause wasn’t helped by the right elbow injury he had in late 2016 and into 2017. Indeed, he underwent minor surgery on it as recently as after the Australian Open this year, which again hampered his attempts to return to the top of the game. Much of his problems seem to have been mental though and there was perhaps a difficulty in finding motivation after securing the career Grand Slam.
The last couple of months have seen signs that Djokovic may finally be on the right track again though. A quarter-finalist at this year’s French Open was a start and then he finished as runner-up to Marin Cilic at Queen’s in a match he could have won.
Next up for Djokovic is Japan’s Kei Nishikori. The pair have never previously faced each other on grass, but Djokovic holds a 13-2 career advantage over Nishikori and should prevail.
A certain Roger Federer presents a major obstacle and Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro certainly can’t be written off, but at 4/1 (5.00) with bet365*, Djokovic looks a decent value bet to win a long-awaited 13th Grand Slam title.
