Newcastle Jets v Central Coast Mariners Betting Tips – 26th February 2017

Back in the 2007-08 A-League season, Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners were doing battle at the very top of the ladder. The Mariners came out on top in that regular season campaign, winning their first ever Premiership on goal difference.

That was far from the end of the story though.

The two were drawn against each other in the major semi-final with the Mariners coming through a dramatic two-legged affair. One week later, Newcastle Jets also booked their place in the Grand Final, setting the stage for the F3 Derby to decide the biggest prize in Australian soccer.

The Jets took their revenge at the Sydney Football Stadium even though their 1-0 win will always be remembered for a penalty that was never given for what looked to be a blatant handball.
It’s not a match which Central Coast Mariners fans like being reminded about but it did at least solidify the F3 Derby as perhaps the most fiercely contested in the A-League.

When the latest chapter in the F3 Derby history is written on Sunday afternoon it won’t quite have the gravitas of that Grand Final meeting almost 10 years ago.

The Mariners are languishing second bottom in the A-League ladder while the Jets are just two points better off. Mark Jones’ men do at least have an outside chance of qualifying for the Finals Series but they must start winning soon.

Newcastle have won just one of their last six matches which is especially bad news given that the Mariners seem to have turned a corner. Paul Okon has seen his side win three of their last four matches and their defeat last time out came against the A-League’s second placed side, Melbourne Victory.

These two played out a 1-1 draw when they met back in November. While it’s understandable that Newcastle Jets have been installed as the favourite with the bookmakers, we think this game could end up with another point for each side. The draw looks over priced at $4.00 with Sportsbet.

Despite there only being seven more rounds of fixtures before the end of the regular A-League season, there is still one more F3 Derby to be played after Sunday’s encounter. With that match on the horizon, the atmosphere could just be a little more muted than is normal for derby day as everyone knows the real bragging rights will be sorted by that match in April.

If the atmosphere is strange for the derby there’s a chance that could feed down from the stands and onto the pitch. Couple that with the mediocre seasons that both teams have had and you’ve got a recipe for a low scoring affair which throws up two interesting betting options.

The first is to back under 2.5 goals at a tempting price of $2.65 with Unibet.

The second is to head over to the Correct Score market where you can combine our first two betting tips.

The 1-1 score line is available at $8.00 with Bet365. We suggest you take that price while you can.
