Back in the 2007-08 A-League season, Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners were doing battle at the very top of the ladder. The Mariners came out on top in that regular season campaign, winning their first ever Premiership on goal difference.
That was far from the end of the story though.
The two were drawn against each other in the major semi-final with the Mariners coming through a dramatic two-legged affair. One week later, Newcastle Jets also booked their place in the Grand Final, setting the stage for the F3 Derby to decide the biggest prize in Australian soccer.
The Jets took their revenge at the Sydney Football Stadium even though their 1-0 win will always be remembered for a penalty that was never given for what looked to be a blatant handball.
It’s not a match which Central Coast Mariners fans like being reminded about but it did at least solidify the F3 Derby as perhaps the most fiercely contested in the A-League.
When the latest chapter in the F3 Derby history is written on Sunday afternoon it won’t quite have the gravitas of that Grand Final meeting almost 10 years ago.
