Perth Glory v Melbourne City Betting Tips – 16th April 2017

It is almost time for the Finals Series in the A-League. But, before we turn to the biggest games of the 2016-17 season, there’s the small matter of the final round of fixtures to be completed this weekend.

Some teams will simply be going through the motions in these final matches of the home and away season. That may be the case for Perth Glory but it’s certainly not the case for Melbourne City ahead of the two sides’ meeting on Sunday.

Glory know that their place in the playoffs is assured no matter what happens. There’s a chance that they will be overtaken by sixth placed Western Sydney Wanderers but in truth, that makes little difference to their chances in the playoffs.

Mathematically speaking, Kenny Lowe’s men can still finish fourth but to do so would require them beating Melbourne City by a big margin and hoping that Brisbane Roar lose their match against Wellington Phoenix.

Melbourne City, though, have much more to play for at NIB Stadium.

In terms of the Finals Series, City will worry about that when they get to it. For now, they’ve got their eyes set firmly on finishing third to give themselves the best chance of making a first appearance in the AFC Champions League.

Ever since being taken over by the City Football Group, Melbourne City have been planning and working towards domination not just of Australian football but of Asian football.

For a side with such lofty ambitions, City have been very disappointing this season. They’ve got players that almost any other manager in the A-League would love, a huge scouting network and plenty of money to fund their ambitions.

Despite all that going for them, Michael Valkanis’ team have looked ragged and a little lacking in motivation at times this season. Surely, though, they’ll be at their best on Sunday?

After back to back defeats, City got back to winning ways last weekend when they saw off the challenge of Adelaide United. Perth Glory also secured an important win having not tasted victory in any of their four previous matches.

The bookmakers’ odds suggest that both these teams could win all three points. All the bookies have Perth Glory as the favourites but we suggest that the value lies with Melbourne City who are $3.00 with Sportsbet.

The motivation is there for City both in terms of them securing an ACL place and for individual players to ensure they’ve got a place in the squad for next season. Valkanis also has to prove he’s the man for the long term so we’re expecting an away win for his team.

Glory and City have served up two brilliant games in their previous two encounters this season. Glory won the first game 3-2 before they shared the spoils with a six goal thriller.

That gives us reason to hope that we’re in line for another thrilling match at NIB Stadium. So, a bet on over 3.5 goals should pay off at pretty generous odds of $1.93 with Unibet.
