We’re taking a trip to the Etihad Stadium for this weekend’s Hyundai A-League preview. Not that Etihad Stadium, in-case you’re confused, but the one where Melbourne Victory will be taking on Sydney FC.
Despite a 0-0 draw last time out, the Roar remain top of the A-League table with both the best attack and the best defence in the league, accounting for their solid goal difference of +15. A big part of that has been Besart Berisha, who has netted 6 times in 9 appearances.
No player has opened the scoring in A-League games more often than the controversially departing Berisha (5 times) and without the Albanian’s goals, Brisbane would find themselves 8 points worst off and 4th in the table – the position currently held by his new club Melbourne Victory.
The Victory won’t be able to call upon Besart’s services in this one, as the deal has been agreed and begins with the 2014-15 season, but it’s certainly the big news worth talking about this week and it could provide a boost at the Etihad Stadium.
The fans will certainly appreciate acquiring the services of A-League’s most deadly marksman, but for now they’ll be focused on 3 points that could potentially take them to 2nd in the A-League table.
FC Sydney boast a legendary marksman of their own in Italian Alessandro Del-Piero, and the little Italian has found the net 5 times for Sydney this season and created a whole host of chances.
Only 1 of those has come in the past 5 games though as Sydney have failed to pick up any wins, and also extended their poor away run which has seen them win just once in the past 16 A-League outings.
Syndey FC’s case won’t be helped by the record their opponents hold over them, having not lost in the past 13 meetings, and three of the last four meetings has seen the experienced Archie Thompson find the back of the net.
The Victory have only lost back to back games once in 17 games this season so they should be pretty focused on bouncing back from a quite remarkable 5-0 thrashing at the hands of a currently resurgent Wellington Phoenix side.
Despite the fact 7 of the last 13 meetings have been drawn between these sides and Melbourne have clearly struggled to put together any sort of consistent run, you can’t look past just how bad Sydney are away.
There’s zero organisation, they don’t have the confidence to attack despite boosting the best player to ever grace the A-League (albeit he’s a lot older and not what he was), but they possess enough quality and they shouldn’t lack ideas like they do.
