Melbourne Victory v Melbourne City Betting Tips
The A-League has been looking for more international recognition for years now so the news that Usain Bolt would be training with the Central Coast Mariners was extremely well taken.
The 100 and 200 meter world record holder then went one better by scoring his first two goals as a professional and rejecting the advances of a Maltese club to commit to trying to earn an A-League contract.
Bolt’s not quite up to the standards required so we won’t be seeing him in the A-League just yet. What we’ll definitely see on Saturday though is the defending champions, Melbourne Victory, get their title defence under way in a local derby against Melbourne City
Victory Ready to Push for Another Title
The odds available in the A-League winner market with the best Australian suggests that this could be the closest, most competitive season in the league’s history.
Along with Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory are the joint favourites to lift the A-League trophy at a general $5.00. Those prices will fluctuate significantly over the course of the season but the general mood is positive.
Victory have used their marquee funds to sign Japanese superstar, Keisuke Honda. Ola Toivonen, who scored in the World Cup for Sweden, joined from Toulouse while five other players have been also been added.
It’s true that Kevin Muscat needed to added quality over the break given that five of the players who started the grand final left the club but the Victory manager believes his squad is stronger than it was at this time 12 months ago.
Will City Ever Live Up to the Billing?
You would think that the backing of the City Football Group would be enough for Melbourne City to be the favourites for the A-League championship year on year. However, there are five teams shorter than City in the betting for this year’s title.
That price reflects the fact that yet more talent has left the club over the offseason and that Warren Joyce has to get the best out of a group containing a mixture of solid professionals and exciting but unproven young talent.
If everything goes to plan for Melbourne City this season, they could well challenge for the title. That’s unlikely with so many young players and questions to be answered. But can they at least start their season with a positive result?
City to Escape with a Point
We are unsure about Melbourne City’s longer term prospects this season but we do think they’ll be able to secure a point at Marvel Stadium.
Although Melbourne Victory have the better recent head to head record they are traditionally poor in Round 1 with just two wins in their last 13 season openers. That run includes eight draws and we predict another stalemate on Saturday which you can bet on at $3.50 with Pointsbet.
Given that Victory are still on a high from last season’s triumph and they’ve made some good signings in attacking positions, City will surely need to score to get anything out of the game.
That leads us to two more bets.
First, both teams to score looks well priced at $1.57 with bet365.
Second, we think it could well be worth betting on the 1-1 correct score which Madbookie are quoting $6.50 about.
