With only seven rounds of fixtures left in the regular A-League season the pressure is really growing for the teams still battling it out for a spot in the Finals Series.
While there is still a fight for some sides to book a place in the top six, Sydney FC are much more concerned with what’s going on at the very top of the table. Graham Arnold’s men are in danger of running away with the Premiership and it’s going to take a huge collapse for them to throw away their eight point lead.
That’s not to say that there is no potential for a dramatic late shift at the top. The Sky Blues have some tough games still to play including their trip to take on Melbourne City on Friday night.
City currently find themselves in third position in the A-League ladder with a healthy nine point cushion between them and seventh placed Newcastle Jets. There is little chance of Michael Valkanis and his players missing out on a Finals Series berth but they’ll be wondering how well their campaign could have gone were it not for their mid-season slump.
Last weekend’s thumping 5-1 win over Wellington Phoenix was just City’s third win in 12 games. Simply put, they dropped far too many points after a solid start to the campaign and now face a tougher route through to the Grand Final than they otherwise would have had.
