Round 19 of this seasons A-League action will be capped off at Suncorp Stadium when the Brisbane Roar welcome Newcastle Jets on Sunday afternoon. The Roar will be looking to revenge what was an unlikely 0-2 home defeat to the Jets just before Christmas.
The Jets were in ever so slightly lesser form coming in to that game and they’ve only gone downhill since. Newcastle are without a win in seven games since shocking the Roar.
Brisbane have bounced back nicely with just one loss in their last seven outings, including their last two home games.
The back to back losses to Newcastle and Adelaide put a small question mark on the direction in which Brisbane’s home form is heading, but back to back wins over Wellington and Central Coast put their back on track.
They can rubber stamp their return to form after a recent wobble with a home win over Newcastle.
The home side will have the opportunity to re-open a 10 point gap at the top of the A-League table, and if they do so, last weeks enthralling 1-1 draw with the Wanderers will be looked upon as a reasonable result.
The Roar did throw away a 0-1 lead very late on, but Besart Berisha’s opener – his second goal in two games since returning from suspension – is another large positive the home side can draw upon here.
Despite positivity about Brisbane at the moment, and the fact they’re clearly better than any other side in the league this season, there’s something about facing Newcastle that has caused them problems over the years.
They’ve failed to win any of their previous four meetings with the Jets, just two of the last seven and all-time they’ve only won two of 12 meetings on this ground with Newcastle.
Taggart has been a regular thorn in the side of Brisbane in recent meetings, and the Australian leads the scoring for the Jets with eight goals. If you’re feeling courageous, you can back him to score anytime at 3.4 with Sportsbet.
Alternatively, you can back Besart Berisha to net what will be a slightly rarer goal against the Jets at an un-valuable 1.8 at Centrebet
As much as I’ve talked up Newcastle’s ability to cause another surprise here, it’s the business end of the season for Brisbane. The Roar need to prepare properly and start taking the Jets more seriously, rather than overlooking them and their league position.
I think we’ll see a far more determined and attacking Roar this evening, and although they’re capable of an emphatic win, I think the Jets have the experience and firepower to hang around once again and at least net a goal.
Let’s back Over 2.5 goals at 1.83 with Ladbrokes.
