It was not a good Round 10 for either Wellington Phoenix or Sydney FC who both lost last time out but they will each feel they’ve got a great chance of bouncing back with a win when they face off against each other on Saturday. This is the second time that these two have played each other this season and all of the fans who turn up to Westpac Stadium will be hoping for more action than in that 0-0 draw less than a month ago.
On the face of it Phoenix are in a comfortable position. The Kiwi side are sat in sixth position in the A-League ladder and a good run of form would be enough to move them much closer to the top. However, it is looking as though no matter how well they perform this term they won’t be a part of the A-League next season as they’ve effectively been told by the league that they are no longer wanted.
Despite all the off-field issues that the Nix have suffered this year Ernie Merrick continues to demand concentration and effort from his team. Merrick was upset with his team’s performance last week when they lost to Brisbane Roar but they should be fancied to bounce straight back. The bookies have Wellington as favourites at a biggest price of 2.5 with Unibet which looks very good value.
While Phoenix are performing largely as expected it has been a very disappointing season for Sydney FC. Last season the Sky Blues made all the way to the Grand Final where they were thrashed 3-0 by Melbourne Victory. This time around Graham Arnold’s men are six points off the pace set by ladder toppers Wanderers and are more concerned with securing a top six spot than challenging for the premiership. Sydney FC have won just one of their last six games and that is a run of form that should be extended to one in seven against Phoenix who are not just fighting for pride but for their futures.
The Sky Blues have been involved in more games with under 2.5 goals this season than any other team in the A-League. Whereas their football was brilliant at times last year, this time around they are desperately short in terms of creativity and goalscoring in the final third. Arnold is a good manager and he’ll know that with the forward men struggling their best chance of getting anything out of the match at Wespac Stadium is by keeping things tight at the back. You can get decent odds of 1.91 with BetVictor on under 2.5 goals which is the standout bet for this match.
For a correct score bet we can’t look past 1-0 to Wellington Phoenix at odds of 9.5 with William Hill. As we’ve seen this is likely to be a low scoring affair which could be settled by one moment of genius or a defensive mistake. Phoenix will continue to scrap for the win and that persistence could pay off with a narrow win.
