Australia play Ireland in the third and final Test in Sydney on Saturday, with the series locked at 1-1 and everything up for grabs.
Ireland will be seeking their first southern hemisphere series win since 1979, as they look to complete their Six Nations Grand Slam season in style.
The Wallabies had ended Ireland’s 12-match unbeaten run with an 18-9 victory in the 1st Test in Brisbane, but the Irish bounced back with a fully deserved 26-21 win in Melbourne last weekend, courtesy of Andrew Conway and Tadhg Furlong tries and returning fly-half Johnny Sexton kicking 16 points. In doing so, Ireland ended a losing streak of 11 straight Tests against the Wallabies in Australia.
The win in Melbourne was all the more impressive after the Irish had fallen behind to Kurtley Beale’s second-minute try. Australia coach Michael Cheika had named an unchanged side from Brisbane, but Ireland coach Joe Schmidt made eight changes for the Melbourne game, sending out a far stronger team than in the 1st Test, with the starting lineup made up entirely of players from Munster and European Champions Cup and Pro 14 winners Leinster.
In truth the margin of victory could have been wider. The Wallabies were lacking in discipline, with wing Marika Koroibete sent to the bin for a tip tackle on Rob Kearney soon after. Beale’s early try and the loss of scrum-half Will Genia with a broken arm was also a major blow (Genia will, of course, be absent on Saturday as a consequence). On the plus side, David Pocock again caused problems for Ireland at the breakdown.
Ireland were particularly dominant after the interval, with Jack McGrath and Keith Earls both having ‘tries’ ruled out for a double movement and a knock-on respectively following consultations with the Television Match Official.
The momentum is now with Ireland and they will throw everything at Australia in what will be their last game of the season. They have the self-belief and in players like Sexton, Rob Kearney and Conor Murray, they unquestionably also possess the quality to win. At 8/13 (1.63) with the bet365 Sportsbook, an Ireland victory and series win looks worth a bet.
