An enthralling Week 26 has passed and now it’s time to look ahead to the finals. Starting with the Qualifying round on Friday evening, an exciting few weeks of football starts right here! We finished the regular season with a nice win on the Roosters, and now we hope to carry that form over with several picks on this weekends games.
First up the Manly Sea Eagles will be the visitors as South Sydney Rabbitohs hope to respond from a hard fought and narrow loss last week against the rival Roosters.
The bookmakers make the hosts clear favourite to contain their stellar regular season form in the finals, and they’re priced up at 1.50 wth Bet Victor. If you fancy the Eagles to cause an upset, you’ll find a nice chunky price of 2.90 with Unibet.
In reality an upset is likely, and the Rabbitohs should use their home advantage to take a comfortable win in this one. They’ve been hard to beat here all season and that won’t change in the finals.
Manly threw away what looked like being a minor Premier winning season in dramatic fashion and they’re bang out of form coming in to this one.
Next up on Saturday we’ll see more action from the Allianz Stadium, as Sydney Roosters return to action against Penrith Panthers. This game is even more unlikely to provide an upset than any other in the playoffs.
The Roosters were fantastic during the second half of the season and it was all capped by a victory over their gritty neighbours last Thursday. With eight days rest under their belt, I expect a strong showing against a side they’ve already thrashed this season.
The sides last met in Round 19 when the Roosters ran out 32-12 winners, and you can question whether they truly even got out of second gear on that day. Pride would suggest there will be more fight about them in the finals, but they still lack the quality to truly challenge the Roosters.
This is a double digit spread that I will happily place a bet on.
Last but not least this weekend we’ll see the second elimination final. It could prove to be a pretty even affair when sixth placed Melbourne faces seventh placed Canterbury on Sunday, although the Bulldogs have ran out winners twice this season.
In Round 4 the Bulldogs scored 40 points on their opponents, and in Round 18 they beat the Storm 6-4 on the road in a real gritty affair. I wouldn’t expect that high scoring a game this weekend and I don’t think the Bulldogs will run riot like they did early in the season.
Expect a gritty and wholehearted performance from both sides, even if it does lack a bit of quality at times, it should still be enjoyable.
