Rugby Championship Round 5 Betting Tips

Published: 26.09.2018

The stage was set for New Zealand to wrap up the 2018 Rugby Championship title with a fourth straight win when they faced South Africa in Wellington two weeks ago. As it turned out, the Wallabies pulled off a surprise win and they’re targeting another big win when Australia visit Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the All Blacks will try to put that defeat behind them when they face Argentina in Buenos Aries.

We’ve previewed both games below including the best Rugby Championship Round 5 betting tips for you below.

South Africa v Australia Betting Tips

How dramatic should we be feeling about the Wallabies’ slump?

After a short upturn in their fortunes by beating South Africa, Australia lost again last time out when they faced Argentina at Robina Stadium.

That heaped the pressure back on the shoulders of Michael Cheika.

Usually, this is the time when the Wallabies start getting their act together ahead of a World Cup but it looks to the most pessimistic fans that we could be in the middle of a sustained slump which will end with Australia no longer being a major Test playing nation.

That’s almost certainly too dramatic but it is not dramatic at all to suggest that the Wallabies will do very well to avoid defeat when they face South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

The Springboks have themselves had their problems during the Rugby Championship. The relief was palpable on the faces of the South African players after they just about managed to cling on to beat New Zealand two weekends ago and the job now is to build on that win so they can travel to Japan with real momentum.

The bookies believe that the Springboks will be able to do just that. While Cheika is happy to stick to his guns we just don’t think Australia are playing well enough currently to win at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

This is set to be another tough match for Cheika so we recommend betting on South Africa to win at $1.40 with Pointsbet. If you think Australia will be soundly beaten, take the $2.45 that TopBetta are quoting on South Africa winning by 13 points or more.

Argentina v New Zealand Betting Tips

If Argentina ever have a chance of beating New Zealand, this might be it.

The All Blacks are still licking their wounds from that incredibly tense defeat against South Africa a fortnight ago. While you’d expect the best team in world rugby union to come out fighting, this will be no normal atmosphere.

The Estadio José Amalfitani in Buenos Aires will be rocking come kickoff as the Pumas fans sense weakness among the tourists. They’ll be doing all they can to make life as difficult as possible for the All Blacks who will surely be feeling the pressure despite all the big stages they’ve played on previously.

It’s not just New Zealand’s recent defeat that has Argentine rugby fans dreaming of a win. The Pumas put up one hell of a fight when they went down to a spirited defeat in the two teams’ first meeting of the Rugby Championship a few weeks ago in Nelson.

While there will be inevitable nerves among the New Zealand players, Steve Hansen may actually be happy that his players look to be in line for such a tough test. We’re close enough to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan for head coaches like Hansen to be finalising their plans for the tournament.

The All Blacks’ problem against South Africa was that they were just too open. Their scoring power nearly saw them get away with it but Hansen will want to ensure that his team tighten up before heading to Japan.

A match against a fired-up Argentina team is a great opportunity for New Zealand to turn in a controlled performance in difficult circumstances. It’ll be tough but we think the All Blacks will be able to secure a relatively comfortable win so recommend backing them to win by between 11-20 points at $3.75 with bookmaker.com.au
