Sunshine Coast PJ O’Shea Stakes Day Betting Tips

Published: 31.05.2018

Our horse racing coverage may come from the Sunshine Coast but the track at the course for Saturday’s action is set to be heavy (10).

That adds another level of intrigue to the busy nine race card and it makes things a little more interesting for punters. So, to help you with your weekend horse racing betting, we’ve gone through three of the races in the search for those all important winners.

The Phoenix (Race 3)

We start our Sunshine Coast racing tips with Race 3, the Phoenix. This is a contest for two-year-olds with set weights and penalties which looks nice and open if the bookies’ odds are anything to go by.

Sudoku is the early favourite in the betting. The Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt comes into the race off a five week break having claimed his first win on soft ground at Newcastle.

There will always be question marks about horses who are untested on heavy ground though and the fact that Sudoku is also stepping up in distance to 1600m is another worry.

With a few tempting options, the best way to approach this one could be by having an each-way bet on Miss Sara even though she is as big as $26 with

Miss Sara has plenty of experience on ground which is either soft or heavy and while winning isn’t exactly habitual for her, a place is by no means out of the question.

PJ O’Shea Stakes (Race 5)

Our next tip comes from the feature race of the day, the PJ O’Shea Stakes. This 2200m contest is a weight-for-age Group 2 and we have a very firm favourite in the shape of Egg Tart ($1.60 with Bet365).

Before we get onto the favourite it is worth stating the case for a couple of the main competitors. Tradesman is one worth keeping an eye on if you don’t mind forgiving him for a very poor finish to the Doomben Cup while Gallic Chieftain looks potential each-way value at anything around $10.

Those two will surely need their very best to beat Egg Tart though. She couldn’t get the win in the Doomben Cup but that was the first time she’d been seen at 2000m for a while. That makes her performance in finishing second pretty impressive and she should be better both for the run and the drop down in class.

Egg Tart enjoys running on heavy ground so she really is a favourite worthy of being odds-on.

Moreton Cup (Race 7)

We end with the Moreton Cup, perhaps the most competitive race on the Sunshine Coast card which is set to be run under lights in a first for Queensland. There are a handful of horses in with a chance of claiming the winner’s share of the $175,000 prize fund but it might be as simple as just backing the favourite, Handsome Thief.

Calanda is an interesting option as he gets back to competitive action for the first time in 20 weeks but that break is a little too concerning given that he’s only a little bit bigger in price than the favourite.

There has also been a bit of money for Irish Constabulary who is into $14 but it’s Handsome Thief’s record on ground with a bit of give in it that tips the scales in his favour.

His last performance was a decent enough attempt in a Group 1 at Morphettville and going back down to Group 2 company should give connections the wins they desire.
