Royal Randwick Championships Day 2 Betting Tips

Published: 11.04.2018

Day 1 of the Championships at Royal Randwick provided a selection of thrilling races, encapsulating storylines and some big wins for punters.

We get to do it all again this Saturday as Day 2 includes four Group 1 races. We’ve gone through each of those top quality races and picked out our best bets from each to hopefully point you towards some winners for your weekend racing bets.

Australian Oaks (Race 6)

The 2400m Australian Oaks goes a long way to deciding which filly is the best of the current crop of three-year-old stayers and we are all set for a thrilling renewal on Saturday.

It’s no surprise that the top of the betting is dominated by the top first three home in the recent Vinery Stud Stakes. Unforgotten was the favourite that day at Rosehill and is so again on Saturday at $4.00 with Ladbrokes while the Vinery winner, Hiyaam, is available at general $4.80.

However, it’s Aloisia who represents the best value at $7.00 with Unibet.

She did very well to finish strongly in the Vinery and providing she remains in touch with the leaders on Saturday and gets a little more luck, Aloisia can kick on to claim this at a very generous price.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Race 7)

Whichever way to try to spin it there’s really only one story in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, 2017 winner, Winx.

The six-year-old superstar has a winning run that stretches back to May 2015 and the bookies don’t see that changing any time soon. She’s a best price of $1.20 on Saturday and it’s tough to look past her.

That said, backing her at such a short price isn’t exactly exciting. If you want an each-way play for a bit more interest, consider Gailo Chop ($14 with Ladbrokes) who should be back to his best as he returns to compete over 2000m.

Sydney Cup (Race 8)

Run over 3200m, the Sydney Cup is a true test of staying power. The horse who bags connections their share of the $2million prize will show incredible reserves of stamina and their fair share of pace as they kick for the line in the closing stages.

Lloyd Williams is one of those owners hoping to win the big prize purse. He has two horses in the race in Almandin and Aloft and is delighted with the way that preparations have gone for both.

While Aloft’s chances cannot be written off it’s Almandin who heads into the Sydney Cup as the favourite with the bookies. You can still get a generous $4.00 with Betstar and we’d recommend that you do.

Almandin could only finish forth in his first start for new trainer, Liam Howley, but bounced right back to his best when stepped up to two miles at Rosehill last time out. He’s the one the others have to beat but we don’t think they’ll be able to.

Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Race 9)

We end our tips with the mile long Coolmore Legacy Stakes. Without the clear favourite of many of the big races on Saturday, this presents a chance to find a winner at tasty odds and we think we may have found her in Prompt Response.

She never really showed her best when stretched to a mile or more last year but has impressed in 2018 having been steadily stepped up in distance. Her Emancipation Stakes win last time out bodes well and at $8.50 with, Prompt Response could be ready to get the job done in Group 1 company.
