Royal Randwick Championships Day 1 Betting Tips

Published: 05.04.2018
The Championships Day 1 at Royal Randwick is, for many racing fans, their pick of the best single day’s racing of the year. In all there are 10 top class races providing excellent drama and the chance to make a healthy profit.

To help in your quest to beat the bookies, we’ve picked out our choice of the best bets from the four Group 1s on the card.

So, let’s get stuck into the horse racing betting tips.

Inglis Sires (Race 6)

We begin with the sixth race on the Royal Randwick card, the Inglis Sires.

This classic event is for two-year-olds who are stepping up to 1400 meters. It often includes many of the main players from the recent Golden Slipper and the early betting suggests that the winner will come from three of those who lost to Estijaab a fortnight ago.

Oohood is the favourite having been beaten by just a head in the Golden Slipper but it is Seabrook and Long Leaf who are the most appealing from a betting perspective. They both ran better than their odds suggested they would with the latter particularly impressive.

Connections hope Long Leap will improve for the experience and the extra distance so the $8.00 that Bet365 are offering looks a very good price.

Australian Derby (Race 7)

A competitive looking renewal of the Australian Derby is up next. There’s $2,000,000 on the line in this 2400 meter contest and we think we’ve found a very good each-way option in Vin De Dance.

The bookies have made Ace High the tentative favourite with Furore following closely behind. However, Ace High has won just one of seven starts at Randwick while Furore has never even attempted 2400 meters in a race.

Vin De Dance will need his best performance to beat this field but he’s won over the distance and on the expected going so we recommend backing the Kiwi horse each-way at $9.00 with Unibet.

TJ Smith Stakes

The TJ Smith Stakes is one of the year’s very best sprints races in Australia. It’s run at weight for age conditions and carries a healthy prize fund of $2,500,000.

We have a big field by the usual standards of the race but the bookies are having no trouble in picking a favourite. Redzel was narrowly beaten when sent off as the odds-on favourite in the Black Caviar Lightning but bounced back less than a month later to win a Group 2 at Randwick.

That most recent performance saw Redzel break the track record over 1000 meters but he has plenty of previous form at the 1200 meter trip that the TJ Smith Stakes is run over.

In Her Time represents the obvious danger to Redzel but the favourite has proven himself capable of getting the job done on the biggest occasions and looks a good price at $2.30 with Palmerbet.

Doncaster Mile (Race 9)

The prize money continues to increase throughout the Randwick card with the $3,000,000 Doncaster Mile set to provide a cracking race as well as a welcome boost to winning connections.

The Godolphin owned, Kementari, is the main draw with punters and the bookies after a very impressive and lucrative season. Having been beaten into third by Winx and Happy Clapper last time out, Kementari has been very well treated in the weights.

The competitive nature of the race means that the favourite will have to be at his best to see of the challenge thrown down by the likes of Happy Clapper and Dargento. However, the weights, a good barrier draw and Kementari’s good form on dry ground should see him do the business at $3.70 with Ladbrokes.
