Doomben Stradbroke Handicap Day Betting Tips

Published: 07.06.2018

Doomben Racecourse is very much the place to be for Australian horse racing fans this weekend.

Stradbroke Handicap Day is perhaps the biggest single day of the year for Queensland racing. There are no fewer than three Group 1 races to enjoy and we’ve gone through each of them to pick out our Doomben betting tips.

Stradbroke Handicap (Race 5)

Our Doomben betting tips begin with the feature race of the day, the Stradbroke Handicap. This Group 1 carries a healthy prize fund of $1,500,000 and while it normally takes place over 1400m, the temporary relocation from Eagle Farm to Doomben has seen it reduced by 50m.

Champagne Cuddles is the favourite with the bookies but she could only finish third in the Kingsford-Smith Cup last time out whereas Impending was an impressive winner. That win was the latest in a string of excellent performances from Impending at Doomben.

Connections have no worries about the course, no worries about the distance and no worries about the ground. Despite winning last time out on soft ground, much of Impending’s best work has been done on good ground so he really does look like good betting value at $6.00 with bookmaker.com.au

JJ Atkins Plate (Race 6)

Hot on the heels of the Stradbroke Handicap comes another Group 1 run over a short distance, the JJ Atkins Plate. Run over 1600m, this is a set weights contest for two-year-olds that the bookies’ odds suggest this is a three horse race.

The favourite is the Autumn Sun at $2.45 with Pointsbet. As with every juvenile we are all guessing a little about just how good Autumn Sun can be but the early signs are good about his chances of competing at the highest level of years to come.

Lean Machine is next in the betting. Chris Waller’s colt comes into the race on the back of Group 2 win at Doomben so it a real danger.

Of the three favourites, Zousain is the outsider but he could just be the value bet at $7.50 with Bet365. Lean Machine got the better of Zousain when they met last time out but you have to say things didn’t pan out for him on the day.

Providing the start pans out better and Zousain is in a position to strike in the closing stages, he should reverse the form on his stablemate. Can he get past Autumn Sun though? It’s doubtful so it could pay to back Zousain each-way and Autumn Sun to win.

Queensland Derby (Race 7)

The Queensland Derby brings an end to our trio of Group 1s at Doomben on Saturday. It’s often said that derbies which are run over 2200m are the ultimate test of racing (at least on the flat) and it’s definitely going to take a top class performance to win the Queensland Derby.

Dark Dream and Lucky For All will get plenty of support in the betting but no horse will get as much support at Live And Free who heads into the race as the favourite.

John O’Shea is certainly very happy with the way that his gelding is shaping up. Live And Free comes into the race on the back two wins and while they were under than 2200m, that should ensure he is fresh enough to win at odds of $4.80 with William Hill.

A special mention should also be given to Youngstar. The winner of Queensland Oaks is going to take on the colts and geldings and we think she has a good chance of at least a place at $8.00 with Bet365.
