The countdown to the start of the 2019 Formula One World Championship is on. As has been the case for many years, the season begins with the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park, giving Aussie F1 fans the chance to see the world’s best drivers and assess who has the best chances in the 2019 Formula One season.

What to Watch at Australian F1 Grand Prix

The big question heading into this season is whether Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari can overcome Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. Hamilton won last year’s Drivers Championship to take his tally to five, with Vettel stuck on the four he won from 2010-13. Vettel will turn 32 this year and this may be his last chance to lead Ferrari before his younger teammate Charles Leclerc takes the reins.

Speaking of Leclerc, a lot of attention will centre around the 21-year-old Monaco native’s battle with fellow youngster, 21-year-old Max Verstappen of the Netherlands. Verstappen said he was “very positively surprised” by the new Honda-powered Red Bull during training in Barcelona. Verstappen will be joined at Red Bull this year by another youngster, Pierre Gasly, after Aussie Daniel Ricciardo left Red Bull to join Renault.

Aussie Formula One GP Betting Tips

There are three clear leaders in Australian Formula One Grand Prix betting: Vettel, Hamilton, and Leclerc. Interestingly, Vettel is the race favourite despite being behind Hamilton in Drivers Championship betting. Vettel likes the Albert Park track, having won there in 2017 and 2018. Bet365 is offering the best odds for Vettel at 2.75, with Hamilton on 3.25 and Leclerc on 3.50.

If you’re looking for an upset, it’s worth considering one of Verstappen or Ricciardo. Verstappen is shaping up as one of the primary challengers to Hamilton this year, and PointsBet is paying 9.50 for the Dutchman to win in Melbourne. Ricciardo recorded the fastest lap in Melbourne last year and is paying 251.00 at Unibet. While it’s unlikely Ricciardo will challenge the top drivers, those odds are a little too long to just ignore.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes and Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari have dominated Formula One for the last decade and there’s no reason to believe they won’t again fight it out for the Drivers Championship this year. Hamilton won his fourth Drivers Championship in five years last year, although he finished second to Vettel in Melbourne.

Betting markets for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix should be released in the coming days. In the meantime, all the top online bookies have already opened markets on the 2019 F1 Drivers Championship and 2019 F1 Constructors Championship.

Bet365 has installed Lewis Hamilton as a 2.20 favourite to win the Drivers Championship. Vettel is second favourite at 2.75 and Leclerc is third at 5.50. We think the two Ferrari drivers offer the best value in Melbourne. Vettel is particularly good value given he’s won at Albert Park three times, including the last two years, while Hamilton has only won this race twice.
