South Africa to add to Australia woes in 2nd ODI

Published: 07.11.2018

In truth the win was even more convincing than the basic details would suggest, with South Africa reaching their modest target of 152 with in excess of 20 overs still remaining. In a three-match series, the onus is now on Australia to win in Adelaide to keep the series alive.

After South Africa won the toss in Perth and elected to field, the Australians were always on the back foot following an explosive opening spell from Man of the Match Dale Steyn and then great follow-up work from Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and Andile Phehlukwayo.

The only Aussies who put up any meaningful resistance with the bat against the Proteas were wicketkeeper Alex Carey and pace bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile.

In reply, the South Africans had little trouble in reaching their target, with Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks putting on 94 for the first wicket to effectively end the game as a contest.

The Baggy Greens are, of course, still missing the suspended Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, but that alone doesn’t really explain their recent lamentable ODI form.

The stats speak for themselves.  Australia are currently on their worst ever losing streak in ODIs, having lost seven in succession.  In 11 ODIs in 2018, they’ve lost 10. In their last 21 ODIs, the Baggy Greens have won only two matches.

Given those stats and the obvious gulf in confidence between the two teams, it’s impossible to overlook the South Africans at 1/1 with bet365* to win the 2nd ODI.

If looking for alternative Aussie focused markets, Aaron Finch could lead from the front as Top Australian Batsman at 3/1 with Unibet (Finch was erroneously given LBW in the 1st ODI, but then failed to review a ball that ball-tracking showed would have cleared the stumps), while Mitchell Starc is overdue a decent bowling performance and can be backed to deliver at 5/2 to be Top Australian Bowler.
