England v Australia 3rd Ashes Test Betting Tips

England and Australia will do battle in the third test of the 2015 Ashes Series on Wednesday, as the two sides square off at Edgbaston. England profited in Cardiff but followed it up with a damaging 405 loss run in London a week later. The series is currently tied at 1-1 and we’re here to look at which team will be favoured on Wednesday.

Australia are clear favourites at a price of 1.82 with Unibet, whilst England are rank outsiders at 4.50 with Bet365. The draw is also best priced with Bet365 who are offering 3.75.

Momentum is of course a big thing in a series and it’s clear Australia have that going in to the third test. It’s going to be incredibly hard for Cook and men to wrestle that back, although it’s not impossible.

The way Australia performed in the first test – with Johnson in particular struggling – seems like a distant memory now. The odds to win the series have swung heavily back in the favour of the visitors and it seems like that outing was nothing more than one bad performance and nothing deeper.

Johnson was back in form last week whilst Australia batted superbly. What was most impressive about Johnsons work was that he had to create a lot of his own pace and bounce, receiving little help from the surface. He should be able to do the same on Wednesday.

Although the Aussies did set England a tough total and managed to back it up with some fine work with the ball, the hosts didn’t help their cause with a number of unnecessary shots. Some of those have come at the very top of the order which is most worrying.

It’s hard to build anything if your openers can’t even reach 10 runs. One of the players under the most pressure, albeit early on in his test career, is Adam Lyth. Responsible for knocks of 0, 6, 7 and 36 so far, he has not impressed. It took Starc just two balls to dismiss him last time out.

Now Ian Bell is a far more established name and we expect a lot from him. Dismissed for 1 and 11 last time out, he’s passed 50 just twice this year. Again, England can’t afford to be losing such batters so early.
There’s a lot of pressure on these players and it could go one of two ways. The same could be said for Bairstow. He’s been in fantastic form and he’s earned himself a recall, but as a specialist batsman in at number five, England need him to hit the ground running. Again, that pressure could go either way.

For the Aussies it’s slim pickings to say anyone needs to prove themselves. They played fantastically well last time out, led by Clarke, but if anything it’s Clarke who needs to step up more. He’s been disappointing with the bat for a while now, but he continues to lead his team well.

There are a lot of questions to ask of England, and few to ask of Australia. Confidence is key and I’m sure the Aussies will get on well with the surface. Unfortunately, I think it’s going to be very hard for England to turn this series around.
