Richmond Tigers v Freemantle Dockers AFL Betting Tips

The MCG is the venue for the biggest fixture of the AFL’s Round 17 as the Richmond Tigers host the Freemantle Dockers. The Dockers will be looking for revenge as the last time the two teams met Richmond made the trip to Domain Stadium and ended the league leader’s unbeaten run. With that match still fresh in the memory, this looks set to be a keenly contested fixture.

Both sides have put themselves in strong positions to make the final eight but they are aware of the importance of this fixture as they look to secure a top four finish. Richmond is looking for its first premiership title since 1980 and would dearly love to do the double over the side sat at the top of the ladder. Having made it through the home and away fixtures to the finals in each of the last three seasons, the Dockers will be putting everything on the line to ensure they give themselves another chance of becoming premiers for the first time in the club’s history. A slip up against Richmond could prove to be a huge setback.

Home advantage has given the Tigers slender favourite status with the bookies. The home side is the favourite with every book although some clearly believe that this is bordering on being too close to call. The biggest price available on Richmond is 1.85 with Sportsbet while 10Bet are top priced on Freemantle, rating the Dockers as 2.05 shots.

Neither side convinced when winning last time out. There’s only so long that teams can win without playing good football before it starts having an effect on confidence and now is not the time for confidence to start sapping.
In order for Richmond to secure the win in front of their home fans it will have to control Fremantle’s strengths which mainly lie in the middle. In that respect the key man for the Dockers will once again be Aaron Sandilands. The 32-year-old is showing similar form to last season when he was awarded a place in the All-Australian team. Keep him quiet and the Tigers could get that double, but if he is allowed to dominate the ruck, the Dockers could upset the odds.

The MCG has not traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Freemantle but it has improved its fortunes in recent years. Two wins out of the last three encounters at the home of football will give Ross Lyon’s men plenty of room for encouragement.

This is certainly not an easy match to have a bet on and the best chance of securing a nice bit of profit probably lies in the handicap market. With the Dockers expected to be very competitive, look towards the 1.71 that Unibet are offering on Freemantle +6.5 points. It’s a decent price for a team that could just as easily win by six points as lose by the same margin.

The Tigers have worked hard on improving their defence over the past two seasons. That’s affected their attack but given them a stable base to build from. Given that improvement and the comparative strength of these two – the last four meetings have yielded two wins apiece – it may be prudent to take Unibet up on their offer of 1.9 for there to be under 154.5 points on Saturday.
