Melbourne vs Port Adelaide - AFL - Betting Tips 23-03-2019
The hype around Melbourne has only increased since the Demons bowed out in last year’s AFL preliminary finals. Port Adelaide come into the 2019 AFL season with low expectations, and will be hopeful of starting the season with an upset at the MCG this Saturday afternoon.
Melbourne v Port Adelaide Preview
The Dees looked good in patches in their JLT Series matches against Richmond and Brisbane, but ran out of puff in both matches to run out narrow losers. The good news for Melbourne is co-captains Jack Viney and Nathan Jones will both be ready for round one. Much has been made of the Dees potentially playing two talls this year, but All-Australian ruckman Max Gawn will go it alone on Saturday after recruit Braydon Preuss picked up a groin injury.
Port have plenty of injury worries, with new co-captain Ollie Wines set to miss along with Charlie Dixon. Hamish Hartlett is in doubt, as is ruck Paddy Ryder after suffering a fractured cheekbone in the Power’s JLT win over North Melbourne. With Ryder out, it’ll be up to new recruit Scott Lycett to take on Max Gawn. Lycett, of course, neutralised Gawn to help his old side West Coast to a big win over the Dees in last year’s prelim.
Melbourne v Port Adelaide Betting Tips
The Power beat Melbourne in Adelaide last year after trailing at every change. Melbourne have improved since then, while the Power have gone backwards. With so many players missing for Port Adelaide, it’s hard to see them really challenging the Dees at the MCG. Bet365 is offering generous odds for Melbourne in line betting, paying 1.89 for the Dees with a -5.5-point handicap.
The Demons were the highest-scoring side last season, and were the only team to average more than 100 points during the home-and-away season. Unibet is paying 1.68 for Melbourne to score the first goal on Saturday and 2.00 for them to win by 20 points or more.
