Freemantle Dockers v GWS Giants Betting Preview

The biggest result from Round 17 of the AFL was Freemantle’s late, late win over Richmond at the MCG. The Dockers, who are sitting at the top of the ladder, triumphed by just four points thanks to a 50 metre David Mundy goal in the final minute of play. While the result broke Richmond hearts it solidified Freemantle’s position leaving the team a win clear of the West Coast Eagles in second as they push to secure the minor premiership.

Freemantle will feel it has a great chance to improve its position further against a Greater Western Sydney Giants team that has a woeful record in Perth. The last time the Giants headed west was in Round 5 to play the Eagles. They flew back dejected having been on the end of an 87 point thrashing where they kicked just 33 points, the lowest tally of the 2015 season.

Not only do the Giants have geographical form against them on Sunday, they go into the game on the back of a Round 18 loss. The Geelong Cats comfortably beat Leon Cameron’s men by 27 points in Canberra to leave them just outside the top eight. With time running out, the Giants need performances to improve fairly quickly otherwise they’ll miss out on the finals.

The Giants will be hoping that Phil David makes his long awaited return from an injury which has sidelined him for two months to try and boost their chances of success. However, even the return of the Giants co-captain is unlikely to be enough to save them from a drubbing, at least that’s according to the bookies. Ladbrokes make them as short as 1.22 with Centrebet rating GWS Giants as 4.6 outsiders.

There’s little value in betting on the home side so instead, navigate to the handicap markets for bigger returns. Ladbrokes go 2.6 that the Dockers will win by 39.5 points or more. It’s a big margin but a very good price when you consider the Dockers have the meanest defence in the AFL and the Giants cannot buy a win in Perth. Moreover in the five times that the Giants have played at Dominion Stadium they’ve lost by margins of 95, 113, 111, 76 and 87 points.

The other alternative to increase your winnings on a Freemantle win is by backing the home team in the half-time/full-time market. Freemantle is likely to get off to a quick start, knowing that the Giants will crumble should the pressure be turned on early. Sportsbet are top priced about the chances of the Dockers leading at the halfway stage and at full-time with odds of 1.51. That price is significantly bigger than is available with the other bookies so take it while it lasts.
