The AFL finals are looming on the horizon and there are still teams fighting for position towards the top of the ladder. One such team is the West Coast Eagles. They are one of six teams inside the top eight tied on 48 points and so they can take a big step towards those coveted top four positions with a win against Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday. That, however, is easier said than done. The Magpies may be out of the running for the finals but they are a very good side when playing at their full potential.
Collingwood certainly were not at their best last time out against North Melbourne. The Magpies were comfortably beaten by 40 points as they failed to recover from a horrible start to the match. That they rallied in the latter stages may have been of some comfort to their fans except for the fact that the inconsistency of Nathan Buckley’s side has been a major source of frustration. This is a team who have all the necessary ability to make a real go of it in the finals but instead they are languishing in 12th, some 20 points away from their opponents on Saturday.
The Eagles will turn up to Victoria full of confidence having picked up five straight wins. Not all of those were particularly convincing but a win is a win and the points were particularly welcome at the business end of the season. The main concern for Eagles fans is their poor record in Victoria this season where they’ve won just one game from four. However, that win was their last match in Victoria so head coach Adam Simpson will hope that their Victoria hoodoo is now over.
Tipping Collingwood to win this season is always fraught with danger. Their inconsistent form makes them a tough team to love but when they get up a head of steam they are capable of beating anybody else, especially at the MCG. While the Magpies love playing at the home of football, the Eagles find it much more difficult and you have to go back to 1995 for the last time that they beat Collingwood there. Therefore, the odds of 2.3 that Palmerbet are quoting on a home win looks like good value to us.
If Collingwood do turn up to the MCG in good form and bag a win, it is unlikely to be a big one. The Eagles have so much to play for that they cannot afford a lacklustre performance. Therefore, there may be even more profit to be made from a home win in the winning margin markets. You can get very tasty odds of 4.0 with Sportsbet on Collingwood winning by 1-24 points. It is tough to see them wining by more than 24 points so that is another price to snap up.
It’s not just at the MCG where the Eagles have found life difficult. They’ve been pretty poor on the road in general this season. Key players up forward like Josh Kennedy Jack Darling have been doing a great job at home but on the road their form has deserted them all too often. That leads us to believe that this match is going to be a fairly low scoring affair so bet on the ‘no’ selection in Bet365’s both teams to score market at 1.95.
