We’ve only had eight rounds of this AFL season but it has already been one of the best in recent history. Round 8 proved, once again, that this is a golden age of footy with yet more late drama, fierce battles and betting upsets.

You can be sure that we’ll have more quality entertainment to enjoy and we hope to add some profit to your betting balances alongside it with our pick of the best bets from the weekend’s action below.

St Kilda v Sydney Swans

They say that the table never lies but at this relatively early stage of the season, you could say that the AFL Ladder is not telling the full story of where the Sydney Swans are at the moment.

The Swans may have got off to a horrible start but they’ve improved considerably over the last fortnight, most notably in their impressive win over North Melbourne on Sunday. Head coach, John Longmire, must now ensure that he continues to get the best out of the likes of Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker in midfield when they take on St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

The Saints have not been without their own impressive wins recently. Alan Richardson’s men have won their last three matches including away against the GWS last time out.

St Kilda are the bookies’ favourites for the game but Sydney Swans have won the last five meetings between the two which makes them look very good betting value at $2.10 with Palmerbet.

Collingwood v Hawthorn

Round 8 brought very different fortunes for Collingwood and Hawthorn. While the Magpies were just about edged out in a thrilling game against GWS, the Hawks were comfortable victors against the Lions for only their third win of the season.

Hawks fans will hope that their third win in four games shows they can still turn their season around and make the playoffs from 14th in the ladder. However, they’ve recently lost three key men in Ben Stratton, James Frawley and Cyril Rioli to injuries which will keep them out for the majority of the campaign.

Those injuries play a role in the bookies making Collingwood the clear favourites for Saturday’s game at the MCG despite the Pies being three spots below the Hawks on the ladder.

The Magpies may have gone down to defeat against GWS but there were plenty of positives from that last gasp defeat. This is the club’s worst start since 2005 and you get the feeling the Magpies are about to hit a run of form and get closer to where they expect to be.

We’re confident enough about Collingwood to make them our best bet of the weekend at $1.55 with Unibet. If, however, you’re looking for a bigger pay out then back a Magpies winning margin of 1-39 points at $2.08 with Ladbrokes.

Brisbane Lions v Adelaide

The early stages of the season suggested that the Adelaide Crows would be the dominant side in the AFL this year. However, they’ve been brought back down to earth with consecutive defeats in the last fortnight and need to bounce back against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday.

On paper, this does look like the perfect game for the Crows. You’ve got the competition’s best attacking force against its worst defence which is a recipe for a thumping, morale boosting win.

On the flip side, Lions fans will be worried about how damaging a big defeat could be for their young side. The lack of experience in their ranks means somebody must step up to keep their heads above water after what we believe will be a thrashing.

From a betting perspective, the best bet looks to be the Crows -47.5 points at $1.91 with BetEasy.
