Western Bulldogs v Brisbane Lions
On first viewing, Saturday afternoon’s encounter between the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions looks like a mismatch.
Luke Beveridge’s team have already won three of their four matches in the new season and the best price you’ll find about their chances is the $1.09 that Sportsbet are quoting. However, there are reasons to suggest that the Lions may make this a more difficult match than anybody is expecting.
Beveridge told the press that his team are not yet consistent enough either from week to week or in individual games. Their play up forward is an area in which there’s particular room for improvement but the chances of that improvement coming on Saturday are damaged by the injuries to Travis Cloke, Jordan Roughead and Jack Redpath.
These two have shared three wins a piece since 2013 and while we’re not suggesting that the Lions will be able to win at Etihad Stadium, we think they’ll put up a battling display which makes the $2.15 that Ladbrokes are quoting on the Lions +41.5 points look like good value.
Sydney Swans v Greater Western Sydney
The omens are not good for the Sydney Swans ahead of the derby against Greater Western Sydney. John Longmire’s men have lost their first four matches of the AFL season and the last time that they went 0-5 at the start of a campaign they went on to capture the wooden spoon.
The Giants, meanwhile, are flying with three wins and a loss. That form has seen them installed as the $1.54 favourites with Unibet for Saturday’s match. The Swans are as big as $2.75 with Sportsbet but could those odds look like great value come the end of the match?
The Swans are desperate to get their season going and they’ve never been beaten by GWS at the SCG. Moreover, the Giants will have to deal with injuries to key players whereas the Swans will welcome back the likes of Kurt Tippett and Jarrad McVeigh.
This match could provide a nice profit for contrarians like us who fancy another Swans win at the SCG.
Freemantle v North Melbourne
Like the Sydney Swans, North Melbourne are winless from their four starts so far. The Kangaroos’ disappointment will be heightened further by the fact that they had a very good opportunity to get one over on the Bulldogs on Good Friday but let that chance slip by.
North Melbourne must now rediscover their composure for their match against Freemantle.
How the Kangaroos would love the sort of resurgence that the Dockers have been through. A combination of youth and experience has seen them recover from their shocking start and they can continue in their winning ways at $1.55 with Palmerbet.
Brisbane Lions +41.5 points against the Brisbane Lions at $2.15 with Ladbrokes
Sydney Swans to beat Greater Western Sydney at $2.75 with Sportsbet
Freemantle to beat North Melbourne at $1.55 with Palmerbet
