AFL Round 21 Betting Offers and Tips – 11th August 2017
It’s Round 21 in the AFL but the finals picture is still anything but clear.
Positions can still change significantly among the top four while there are seven teams separated by just four points a little lower down with each of them still battling for a place in the top eight.
With yet more drama expected this weekend we’ve picked out three key games and have out best betting tip from each in our AFL previews below.
Western Bulldogs v Greater Western Sydney
The first game of Round 21 is arguably the most exciting of the weekend. There is no love lost between the Western Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney and they are both in search of a strong finish to the regular season to boost their playoff chances.
Defending premiership champions, the Bulldogs, have finally hit their stride. After a tough start to the season Luke Beveridge’s men have now won their last four games in a row. That’s left them in seventh place with a four-point cushion between themselves and the West Coast Eagles in ninth place.
The Giants’ form has been a little less impressive of late but at least they’ve won their last two matches following a run of just one win in six.
GWS still have an outside chance of catching Adelaide Crows to win the minor premiership but they will be more than happy to confirm their place in the top four.
Victory on Friday night at Etihad Stadium would go a long way to finalising the top four for the Giants but we aren’t so sure they can stop the Doggies in their current form.
Led by Marcus Bontempelli, the Bulldogs are looking increasingly like the team who stormed the finals a year ago and they look a good bet to win a fifth straight game at $2.16 with Unibet.
In years gone by, the finals positions have been pretty much sorted by this stage of the season but the fight for the top eight is going to go right down to the wire this time around.
Just four points separates the teams from fifth to 11th with Essendon finding themselves clinging onto eight place by the skin of their teeth.
To ensure that they remain there, the Bombers have to find a way past the team who are currently top of the shop, the Adelaide Crows.
There are two ways of trying to tackle the Crows. You can either try to stop the AFL’s highest scorers or you can try to outscore them. You can be sure that Essendon will choose the latter option as they rank third for total points scored this season.
Essendon will be buoyed by four wins in their last five matches but their recent record against the Crows is miserable.
The Bombers were hammered when the two met in Round 4 and the Crows have won their last three encounters.
The Crows should be able to maintain that run against the Bombers but the home side are expected to put up a good fight. So, we recommend backing Adelaide to win by 1-19 points at $4.33 with Sportsbet.
Melbourne v St Kilda
When Melbourne take on St Kilda at the MCG it will in effect be a playoff game before the playoffs.
The Demons and the Saints are two of the teams on 40 points but they both currently sit outside of the top eight. Therefore, the loser of their clash is highly likely to have to wave goodbye to any hopes of extending winning the premiership.
St Kilda know all about the pressure of must win games, they came through one last weekend.
Three losses in a row looked to have ended their finals hopes but they came through a tough encounter against West Coast and will be looking to ride that momentum all the way to September.
While the Saints are fighting for their future, the Demons look to be giving theirs up. Two straight defeats have turned a relatively strong position into a precarious one and it would be no surprise to see them take another misstep against the Saints.
The $2.24 that Palmerbet are quoting on St Kilda looks too big to ignore.
