AFL Round 20 Betting Tips – 3rd to 5th August 2018
Richmond v Geelong
The big games keep on coming for the AFL leaders.
Richmond faced a tough test against Collingwood but passed with flying colours thanks to a 28 point win. That moved the Tigers four points clear of West Coast in the ladder but it doesn’t get any easier in Round 20 when they take on the Geelong Cats at the MCG.
The Cats dragged themselves into finals contention last weekend thanks to a 42 point win over Brisbane. Head coach, Chris Scott, knows his team must keep their foot on the gas to extend their season into September but can they head into next week’s crucial clash with Hawthorn on the back of another win?
It’s now 18 wins in a row for the Tigers at the MCG. We expect that run to continue but only by a fine margin and therefore recommend betting on Geelong +18.5 points at $1.92 with bookmaker.com.au.
Hawthorn v Essendon
Essendon badly needed a win in Round 19 against the Sydney Swans to have any realistic hopes of making the finals. The Bombers didn’t fluff their lines at Etihad Stadium, running out 43 point winners.
The Bombers will need a repeat of last weekend’s performance when they take on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday. They were relentless in the way they moved the ball to keep the Swans on the backfoot and took full advantage of their tiring opponents.
Hawthorn currently occupy a place in the top eight and know that the Essendon boys are hot on their heels. The Hawks have done well to win their last two matches by big margins against Carlton and Fremantle and will be further boosted by their record of eight wins from their last 10 meetings with the Bombers.
The Bombers’ ability to use the pace and power in their ranks will be crucial to their chances of making the finals and of beating Hawthorn. This promises to be a very good match but the Bombers’ momentum makes the $2.40 that Centrebet are quoting on the Essendon/Essendon selection in their half time/full time market worth a bet.
Sydney Swans v Collingwood
This is not the time of the season to lose your form. A run of four defeats from their last five matches has seen the Sydney Swans slip out of the top eight.
With just four points separating the ninth placed Swans from third placed Collingwood, you get the feeling that this match at the SCG could prove to be a vital one.
The Pies still have work to do to ensure a top four finish especially as their own form is inconsistent at best. While Nathan Buckley will be doing all he can to remind his players that they remain one of the best sides in the AFL, he’ll know just how tough Saturday’s match is going to be as the Swans desperately fight to keep their season going.
There is sure to be a fair amount of nervous tension when the Swans and Pies take to the pitch and we think that will result in a tight match. Recent meetings between these two have been relatively low scoring so it could be worth taking a risk by betting on under 150.5 points at $2.88 with Palmerbet.
